2024 Toyota Venza Versus Its Competitors
How Much The 2024 Toyota Venza Costs
2024 Toyota Venza
The Toyota Venza is a midsize crossover built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform. It sources almost all of its mechanical components from the current RAV4 Hybrid, including the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson engine, but with one electric motor. The LE, XLE, Limited, and Nightshade Edition all produce the same 219 horsepower and 163 pound-feet to all four wheels via an eCVT.

- Plush ride
Cons
- Bland driving characteristics
- Dull acceleration
- Limited cabin space
- Noisy engine
The Toyota Venza is a midsize hybrid crossover that essentially acts as a high-riding alternative to the current-generation Prius. It sits on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, similar to the RAV4 and Crown. This means it also adopts most of these two models' mechanical components. The Venza is essentially a more lifestyle-minded and eco-conscious crossover option from the Japanese manufacturer.
The Venza is a lesser considered crossover option in Toyota's catalog, despite it being more of a generic than a niche option. Last year, the model sold well below the brand's projected sales figure. Its limited relevancy is why Toyota Japan has discontinued its production as of this year, placing all the assembling responsibilities on its Chinese division. As a result, this is the last year of the Venza here in the USA.

What’s New For 2024
The Venza enters 2024 with no noteworthy changes as it makes way for its official replacement, the all-new Crown Signia SUV. Toyota added a sub-flagship Nightshade Edition to the 2023 model year, which is essentially an XLE with black wheels, bumper accents, grille surround, mirror caps, and door handles. XLE models also enjoy an upgraded set of LED foglights. Interestingly, these are the only changes ever handed to this generation Venza since it was introduced in 2021.
2024 Highlights
- All-new Nightshade Edition trim (2023)
- LED foglights for XLE trim (2023)
- Naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson engine with one electric motor
- Standard all-wheel drive
- Optional Star Gaze fixed panoramic roof

Specifications And Performance
You can only have the Venza with Toyota's 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson engine and three permanent-magnet motors. This drives a combined 219 horsepower to all four wheels via an eCVT, resulting in a claimed 7.5-second 0-60 MPH time. Independent road tests suggest 7.6 seconds is an achievable time in real-world conditions, making Toyota's claim accurate enough. Toyota electronically limits top speed at 118 MPH.
The Dynamic Force engine produces 176 horsepower in isolation and benefits from the brand's patented D-4S dual-fuel injection and electronic throttle control system for responsive engine characteristics, particularly in the lower revs. The three motors generate 118 horsepower to the front and 54 horsepower to the rear, but it only runs in EV mode under very specific and low-speed instances. Overall, the hybrid system is merely a supplementary drive unit for the ICE.

This is still an effective system, as it grants the mid-size SUV a rather impressive 40/37/39 MPG estimate on the EPA's city/highway/combined cycle. Despite not being a very popular option, this is one of the best results you'll see in its segment. The EPA also estimates the Venza will cover 566 miles on a full tank of gas.

- LED front and rear map lights
- Dual-zone climate control
- Eight-way power adjustable fabric front seats with lumbar support
- 8.0-inch or 12.3-inch infotainment system with six speakers
- Qi wireless smartphone charger
The base LE takes a very conservative approach to standard specification by only including the essential features with some aspirational equipment. Standard inclusions consist of leather multifunction steering wheel and gear selector, dual-zone climate control with a pollen and dust filter, fabric-trimmed seats with eight-way power adjustments and lumbar support for the front row, and ambient lighting for the center console.
The XLE is far more comprehensive as it adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, Intelligent Touch controls for the HVAC system, SofTex seat upholstery, front seat heating, wood grain trims, illuminated floorwells, and silver scuff plates. Flagship Limited models include a digital rearview mirror, heated steering wheel, perforated SofTex upholstery, and front ventilated seats.
Fabric upholstery colors consist of Boulder or Black. SofTex adds a Black and Java combination. You can only have Black SofTex in the Nightshade Edition. The Limited is the only model that has access to the Star Gaze fixed panoramic roof for $1,400, but this removes the roof rails. All trims have access to an expansive accessory catalog consisting of Dometic coolers, Kurgo pet equipment, additional cargo facilities, and all-weather interior fittings.
Technology
Base LE trims make do with Toyota's smaller 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which does benefit from wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, together with a three-month plan to SiriusXM and a six-speaker audio system. The XLE introduces the updated 12.3-inch system with an optional $800 nine-speaker premium JBL audio system, which is standard in the Limited model.
The LE and XLE feature an analogue instrument cluster, while the Limited adopts the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10-inch head-up display unit. All cars feature a Qi wireless smartphone charger, a rear facing camera, the Smart Key system, and four USB ports for device charging and data transfer.

Safety And Reliability
Toyota standardizes basic safety across the 2024 range with eight airbags covering the front driver and passenger, knees, sides, and curtains. Three-point seatbelts with emergency locking retractor for the driver and automatic or emergency locking retractor for all passengers join this. The Venza earns a respectable IIHS Top Safety Pick award, falling short of the top Plus category due to its inferior advanced driver assist equipment. It also enjoys the NHTSA's five-star overall crash test rating.
J.D. Power grants the Venza an Average 76/100 rating for quality and reliability, citing an overall impressive perceived quality level, but with some noticeable flaws. The 2024 Venza currently has no recalls, investigations, or complaints.
Driver Assistance Features
Toyota equips the Venza with its older Safety Sense 2.5 suite, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, and road sign assist. The range also features blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and hill start control.

2024 Toyota Venza Versus Its Competitors
The Toyota Venza has had the tough job of competing with some truly competitive hybrid crossovers. Since its 2021 arrival, the Venza has failed to make a dent in the midsize hybrid crossover, predominately due to cars like the Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V Hybrid. Of course, its biggest threats lie in the Toyota arsenal, namely the RAV4 Hybrid.

The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid partly dominates the midsize hybrid crossover segment, thanks to its efficient but powerful drivetrain. Despite producing more power, it is unable to beat the Venza in a 0-60 MPH acceleration sprint and struggles with a worse EPA-estimated combined consumption, despite featuring a larger battery pack. This is a strong example of how Toyota remains an unbeatable force in the hybrid segment.
The reason why the Venza falls short of the South Korean option's market success is because it doesn't offer the same value. It's around $2,500 more expensive with near-identical specification levels. The Venza also struggles with a more cramped cabin. Reviewers also note the Tucson to translate a far more enjoyable chassis, with improved handling and comfort levels.

The Honda CR-V is a clear winner next to the Venza. Its smaller engine and two electric motors produce a bit less power, but noticeably more torque, resulting in an equally impressive 0-60 MPH time and a slightly better combined MPG estimate. Honda also offers the CR-V with front- or all-wheel drivetrains, bolstering the range's diversity.
Couple this with a more attractive starting price, equally impressive specification level, and more interior space gives the Honda a strong advantage. Further widening the gap between the two hybrid crossovers is the CR-V's more comprehensive safety equipment, earning it a better Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS and better crash test results from the NHTSA.

Is It Worth Buying The Toyota Venza?
The Venza's lack of success in the American market is all the evidence we need to declare it not the best midsize hybrid crossover purchase. On paper, it ticks plenty of boxes, but its overall execution falls a bit flat. The Venza suffers from uncompetitive pricing, poor performance abilities, and a cramped cabin.
Despite these flaws, we give credit to its efficiency returns, comprehensive safety equipment, and generous standard features beyond the LE trim. Toyota clearly understands that there is value in offering an aspirational hybrid crossover, which is why the Crown Signia will be replacing it later this year. Structurally, this is pretty much the exact same car, but it enjoys more power, a more striking exterior design, and a more premium moniker. The Signia also does away with the base LE trim, so expect it to be quite a bit more expensive.
